Born in 2015 from the split-up of HP, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) carries the brand’s legacy as a leading player in the field of enterprise technology.
From PCs to enterprise software
The history of the Hewlett-Packard name goes back to 1935 when the original organization was founded in the garage of William Hewlett and David Packard. Initially producing a range of electronic test equipment, the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) rose in the intervening years to become one of the leading manufacturers of personal computers (PCs) worldwide. It also turned into a paramount manufacturer of servers, storage devices, and networking equipment, all while delivering a variety of IT services for both consumers and enterprises. Following the break-up of the IT giant in 2015, two companies were born: HPE and HP Inc. – the well-known PC and peripheral specialist – with HPE taking over the enterprise software, servers, and storage segments. Both HP Inc and HPE continue to bring in multi-billion-dollar revenues, with HPE generating revenues of nearly 30 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. HPE’s business is divided into four segments, of which Compute has been the most profitable since 2020, with around 11.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenue as of 2023. It is followed by the Intelligent Edge and Storage segments, recording revenues of around five billion U.S. dollars and just under 4.5 billion U.S. dollars, respectively. Intelligent edge technology tackles latency, costs, and security risks by analyzing data and developing solutions at the site where the data originated instead of sending it to a third party. The Intelligent Edge segment of HPE addresses key themes such as cloud computing, edge computing, network security, and the Internet of Things (IoT) edge. Through its edge-to-cloud strategy, HPE capitalizes on emergent megatrends to meet customer expectations for enterprise technology. In line with this, the company also has a High-Performance Computing and Artificial Intelligence (HPC & AI) segment. Traditionally confined to universities and government institutions, supercomputers are expected to become increasingly mainstream, allowing businesses to make more informed and efficient decisions based on data-intensive simulations and large-scale AI applications.
